In the movie Lion King (like most movies) there a clean division in what characters share good morals and what dont i.e
Scar: bad morals - jealous - lies
Mufasa : good morals - respect
The formation of the characters in this way helps with making readers feel more for the issues impacting the protaganist in the story.
So how about good and evil in reality. Well it complicated. We form our own individual understanding of good and bad based on individual experience, readings of religion, ethics, law and pop culture. This clash of beliefs systems can form many paradoxes.
- Confirm to your country belief
- Conform to company policy
- Conform to law
- Conform to religion doctrine
- Follow instinct
- Follow your heart
- Do good for the environment
- Don't be selfish
- Money is evil
- Do what makes you happy
- Be your best you can be
- Sleep
- Value yourself
As an example consider the scene in Dark Knight where you have to choose between killing one person (Rachel or Dent). Some choice.

How do we avoid being bad when good and bad conflict. Do we accept what is is ? Do we not act at all ? Do we do something that feels partially wrong ? Do you just do it and let the repressed feelings settle at the back at the head ? Spend time on self work trying to mediate bad thoughts out ?
From what I have observed the more cluttered with repressed thoughts we become the less aware of what we really want and our surrounding ? Concerning is that the less aware we are of this state the more are (or can be) controlled by the environment/others. Which means there actually potential relationship here that exists between our decision made and how much we want to be controlled in the future (via the perceived feeling of what we have done is partially bad)
This relationship mimics that which has been made by human kind in the Bible. Decision (adam and evil sin) leading to future pain control
How people are handling this can be summarised in to quite a few approaches. I listed a few here
- Present moment focus
- Self Acceptance
- Choose closest to good
- Dont listen to though process as much
- Religion
- Focus on ego
- Distractions (music etc)
